And the baby goes into the box…

Up until today, we haven’t spend much money on baby stuff. We’ve been given a lot of things, and that has helped a lot, and much of what we’ve bought has been used. We saved at least 4000kr or $700 by buying a used baby carriage.

But today, we bought a brand new baby-related item: a bike trailer. (It wasn’t terribly expensive by itself, but they really get you for each accessory, of which there were plenty.) We really wanted something that would allow us to get back on the bikes. Walking with a baby carraige is nice, but it really limits how far we can go.

We were a little worried about the whole idea, because they don’t even make bike helmets for babies this young. But we found a brand that has a very clever accessory. It’s sort of a hammoc with a safety harness, so, in addition to the suspension on the trailer, the baby itself is suspended. It works really well. There are some rough spots and bumps on the way to the beach, but with the hammoc, the suspension, and slowing down before each bump, Ellen slept most of the time.

Six long weeks

Ellen is six weeks old today, and is a very different creature from the one we first brought home.

She stays awake longer than she used to during the day. She also sleeps more at night, which is great. She slept for nine hours a few nights ago.

But more importantly, she’s more alert.  She likes to be where the action is, and she shows interest in things around her. She can’t use her hands well enough to grab ahold of things yet, but you can tell she’d like to.

She’s more vocal too. When she gets excited about something, her little arms and legs start moving faster, and a few seconds later she makes a loud sort of squak. It isn’t much, but it’s her own voice, and she knows it.

Over to the dark side

I’m proud of my pictures. And one of the things I’m most proud of is that my pictures are largely un-manipulated. Sure, I adjust the contrast and crop images here and there, but overall my pictures are straight from the camera. That is to say, I don’t use Photoshop. Or I didn’t anyway.

Recently I decided to try it out. I figured what the heck — what’s the worst that could happen? I did this mostly because infants are messy creatures, and I had a lot of pictures that would be nice if it weren’t for some peeling skin or a glob of snot.

The least ethically questionable way to use Photoshop is to use it to fix red eyes or and remove power lines. But that’s like the samples that drug pushers hand out. You figure well ok — just this one time — but soon you’re rifling through your collection, looking for blemishes and power lines to erase. The next thing you know, you’re erasing churches.

The Frog at four weeks

I swore I wouldn’t do this. I swore I wouldn’t post batch after batch of baby pictures. I’ve always been annoyed by people that send out more than one picture of their newborns.

Babies are just not interesting to look at. They are often not even pleasant to look at. So sending out one picture is understandable, but two is pushing it. I don’t even want to count how many I’ve posted.

Ellen

Despite the weeks of waiting, and trying to expect the unexpected, the big day came in sort of an unsurprising way. We had a standing appointment on Monday for a checkup, in the event that the baby had not come before then.

And so, almost as if prompted by the deadline, Lisbeth started to have pains late Sunday night. The pain was strong enough to keep her up all night, but not strong enough for her to decide that we needed to head to the hospital. So we went the next morning for our 8:45 appointment.

That time of the year

It’s that time of the year.  When, although it may not be any warmer, you can tell the winter is waning. When, although I didn’t think I minded the dark of dead winter, I feel a profound sense of relief. When suddenly, I don’t need lights on my bike when I leave work.

I took these on my ride home after work this week. Compared to the shortest day of the year, there are now two and half extra hours of light every day. And the shortest day of the year was only eight weeks ago.

New Years in Copenhagen

This year I spent New Years in Copenhagen for the first time, having been invited to a party by our friends Anja and Torben. I’d heard a lot about it, and it sounded like fun. Indeed it is fun, but unfortunately I was completely jet-lagged, having gotten back from New Mexico the previous day. I was so tired that I fell asleep on the couch of people I’d only just met, with five adults and three kids running around.

DSC_4084.JPGApparently I thought that since Americans have a special relationship with fireworks, Europeans didn’t. It turns out that Europeans (or Danes and Germans at least) LOVE fireworks. Our fourth-of-July is their New Years Eve.

DSC_4159.JPGThey love fireworks so much that some of them drive four hours to Germany, where they can purchase fireworks that are illegal in Denmark. They love fireworks so much that some fireworks are ignited at the dinner table. They like fireworks so much that extra fire fighters, paramedics, and clean-up crews have to be deployed.

Christmas at Magasin

Perhaps it’s just because I’ve been busy. Perhaps it’s because it’s winter. Perhaps it’s because I’ve lived in Copenhagen for almost three years now and just don’t find it as exotic as I did before.

Whatever the reason, I haven’t felt as motivated to take pictures recently. And so, last week when I managed to pull my camera out of my bag and snap a few pictures, it seemed worth posting.

Magasin is the iconic department store in Denmark. Most big cities in Denmark have one, but the one in Copenhagen is clearly the flagship — sort of a Danish version of Macy’s in Manhattan, I suppose, never having been there…

At any rate, it looks pretty nice at Christmas.
