The toilet in the apartment was very old. Probably not as old as the building (that would make it well over 200 years old), but quite old. It ran constantly, wasting water, and wasn’t nice to look at either. I’ve been meaning to have it replaced since I moved in. That was only two years ago. Lisbeth thinks I was procrastinating. Whatever.
She decided not to wait to find out and called a plumber. He showed up on Tuesday. He was a typical plumber, I thought — one might even see him on the street and think, “that guy looks like a plumber.” He was big a big burly guy with a large mid-section — almost cartoonishly so, probably in his late 40s, with short grey hair. He removed the old toilet in what seemed like 60 seconds, and then carried it out of the apartment with his arms straight out in front of him, like a kid might carry a large balloon. A few minutes later, I left for work.
He bought a new toilet and returned with it, and chatted with Lisbeth while he installed it. She learned that he used to work in the tech sector years ago, but grew tired of that and went into plumbing. But now he was tired of plumbing, and was transitioning into something new: clairvoyance.
He told her that he’d discovered his talent back at the tech job when it turned out that the cleaning staff didn’t want to enter a certain building. He went inside this building, and learned that some ghosts were living there. He spoke with them, and asked them to leave. They did, and the cleaning staff no longer feared that building.
He went on to explain that he’s starting up a clairvoyance school in Sweden, and is looking for students. He asked Lisbeth if she knew anyone that might be interested. She didn’t.
It just goes to show that you really can’t judge a book by its cover. I’m very skeptical about clairvoyance, but hey — he did a great job with the toilet — so maybe he’s a really good clairvoyant.
He told her that it’s something anyone can learn. She’s not crazy about her new job, so… who knows…
